1 Day Old

Well, under normal circumstances, that would be
the case. This litter however, had a more
interesting start on life, which needs to be
acknowledged.

In August, when the parents were being bred, the
severe rain storms caused power outages, and
floods everywhere. Trees were fallen all over,   and
getting anywhere was difficult due to the many road
closures.

Last Saturday, as Murphy reared his head again, a
severe snow storm hit, which again brought so
many trees down, causing thousands of families to
be without power for several days.

This was the day, with our power and phone lines
out, and no way to get to a vet. in an emergency,
that Maple decided it was time to welcome her
puppies into the world.

My husband, Al and I scrambled around the house
finding any candles, flashlights, batteries, and 1
lantern hoping all the time that Maple would at
least wait till the morning.

No such luck. Her first puppy, Hurricane, made his
arrival around 9 pm that night.   With the assistance
of my neighbor Lori, who got a quick course in
midwifery in the dark, we helped Maple welcome
her 9 pups into the world.

All the pups were fine with no complications
arising. Thank God. Actually, they didn't even
notice anything different than normal. You
see, new born pups are born with their eyelids
shut closed, so they asked "POWER FAILURE"
what "POWER FAILURE?"
