After being in labor throughout the night, Maple's first puppy made her arrival at 11: 30 am on Thursday morning, April 25th. For the most part the delivery went quickly with no complications. All were born by 3 in the afternoon and shortly afterwards Maple and her pups were settled together in their whelping box cleaned up and cozy. All of the pups took right away to nursing as if they had been at it a long time. That is always a relief when the pups can manage nursing from mom on their own right from the start without any help. I am not surprised though as all the pups in this litter were born with good birth weights of 18 and 19 oz. and I am sure they were very hungry. Each one immediately latched onto mom to drink the delicious and nourishing milk she had to offer.
The pictures below are of the puppies only a couple of hours old. At this early age they are not too young to express their displeasure at being fussed with for pictures and would much rather be back in that nice warm spot near mom and the other siblings. Their eyes will remain closed for now and they won't also be able to hear for a while but their sense of smell is very strong and that is how they manage to find mom. In some of the pictures you can see how long the puppies nails have grown already while in the womb. They also have strong vocal chords, so when they have a problem or need, they do not hesitate to let mom or me know. At this age they are very vunerable just like newborn babies, and for this reason, are not left alone 24/7 for the first 3 weeks until they are stronger and more able to get around.
