As I was cleaning
the whelping box,
I started placing
the pups in the
large basket on
the floor. Reilly
had different
plans though as I
found her laying
in the basket with
the 3 puppies I
just placed there.
Although it was
tight quarters,
they all managed
to nurse and be
content while
Reilly relaxed.
Reilly is such a good mother.

Now that the puppies teeth have started to come in, it is time to introduce them to solid food. As they grow with their new teeth and sharp nails, mom needs to start weaning them off her milk. Here they are experiencing their very first meal of gruel. Not quite sure what it was. it didn't take them to long to realize that they loved it. It does get quite messy though, as they haven't yet learned that they should not be stepping into the bowl. Not to worry though cause that is what mom is for: CLEAN UP DETAIL
|
So many changes have happened to the pups in the past week and a half. Now at 3 weeks of age they are starting to resemble and act like real puppies and not just little balls of fur.
Their eyes have opened, so now they can see. They can also hear and are getting much better at walking about. These cuddly little canines are starting to respond and walk toward you a bit, when you get their attention. They now realize there are fun things to play with, like their toys. Even their siblings wind up being a good chew toy every so often.
Their teeth have just started to break through, so they don't hurt that much - YET! Their playtime is very limited though as they still spend most of their time sleeping.
It is now time for them to start being weaned to dog food and it will give mom a bit of a break. Yes, Reilly is quite happy about that too, for more than this reason, as you can see in their mealtime pictures.
