Reilly's puppies are 3 weeks old now. They are really starting to look and act, like the cute golden retriever puppies you would expect. They still sleep most of the day, but when they are awake, you can see how much better they are walking, although still slow and somewhat wobbly. They interact with each other now and are beginning to play with toys. They love to tease each other. It is not unusual to see a mischievous pup chomping on a sibling's ear or tail while they sleep, or are attempting to sleep, that is.
I introduced them to their first solid food this week and it was not too long before they all started eating it vigorously. They love the gruel which is made of of oatmeal, ground puppy morsals, yogurt, and vitamins. Yummy. Reilly, I know is pleased as she will now be able to cut back on her nursing duties as they transition in the next few weeks from eating the puppy mush to the actual hard morsasl they will be eating when they are sent home.
With the pups now on food, it was time to set up their bathroom area. So I opened up the other half of the whelping box. This new side has a potty patch which has artificial grass for them to go to the bathroom on. It will help them get used to going to the grass outside. With both sides opened they have plenty of room to get around. There is a divider between the rooms though, that they have to climb over. It is good exercise for them. On their very first try, some went flying over as if they were hurdle jumpers in the Olympics, while a few smaller siblings took a while to coordinate themselves and figure out how to climb over this daunting partition. They did not give up though. Because you know what they say: "the grass is always greener on the other side" (excuse the idiom, because in this case it was true). By the end of the day though, they all had it mastered, and are able go back and forth easily.
