This 12 DAYS OLD webpage actually has various pictures of the puppies from about 5 days to 2 weeks of age. In just this short time, you can see a big difference already in the puppies. They no longer have the pink noses they had when they were born and their ears have fallen into place. They have more than doubled their birth weight and are starting to move around alot more. They are filling out nicely.
At this age, they still mostly crawl, but do attempt to take a few steps on all fours occasionally. Although successful at times it is short-lived, since they quickly tumble back down. They just don't have the strength in their legs, nor the ability to balance themselves too well yet.
You can see little slits now as their eyes are beginning to open. For some it happens quickly, while for others their eyes won't be fully opened until 3 weeks.
Reilly is starting to sit up when she feeds them, since they can maneuver around better now. This new position gives the pups a little bit more room to nurse. They sure need it, because all the 9 pups usually try to grab a meal at the same time.
They manage quite well in filling their bellies, although, it does get a bit snug at times. They will push themselves into a good nursing spot and it is just too bad if a sibling or two gets moved out of the way. Actually it is funny to watch. They do all eventually manage to get their fill. I weigh them frequently to keep a close watch on their weight. so I can make sure all the puppies are getting their fair share, and gaining like they should.
Being all crowded together is not a problem for them though, because they really love to snuggle. After a good meal you will usually find them all sleeping on or near each other.
