When the puppies were first born they looked so differently than they do now. Their ears are not flattened anymore and their nose has turned from pink to a vibrant black. Their fur has fluffed up a bit too.
These sports enthusiasts are growing very well and they have gained about 2 pounds since they were born. They are trying to walk a little bit, but their legs are just too weak to stay up for more than a second or two. What they lack in stamina is compensated for in their verbal skills. Even at this young age, they can make a racket yelping periodically throughout the day and night. Most of the time there doesn't seem to be any reason. They will even cry when they are in a deep sleep. But their crying is also a very important tool to let their mom or me know something is not quite right. The first 3 weeks of the puppies life, they are not able to get around very well and if mom was to lay on one of them, she would not necessarily realize it and can hurt the puppy. For that reason there is a ledge around the whelping box to give the pups protection.
For the entire time the puppies are living here, I sleep downstairs with them. So when one of them crys, I make sure they aren't in trouble. The other night, I was sleeping when I heard a cry from one of the puppies. I usually wait for a minute to see if it persists and when it does, I will get up to check out the situation. Before I got a chance to get up, Brazin came over and practically jumped on me then ran to the box. She then immediately, came back and jumped on me again and as I got up, she ran back to the box. I then realized something was not right and lo and behold one of the pups was stuck in the corner between the ledges and couldn't figure out how to get out. What a great mom Brazin is to have alerted me to the problem with the puppy.
In the pictures, you will notice that their eyes are starting to open. They will be fully opened by 3 weeks of age. They also will be able to hear shortly, have their teeth break through, and every day get more muscle strength, be more active .
